Our Fort Ligonier Tours are based out of historic Ligonier Pennsylvania. Ligonier is located at the intersection of Routes 30 and 711 in Westmoreland County in southwestern Pennsylvania. It is nestled between two massive, if not spectacular, mountains in the area known as the Laurel Highlands. The Laurel Mountain is to the east and, the Chestnut Ridge Mountain is to the west.
These two mountains permit, few major roadways so the valley, is in effect, protected by two great walls,
ten miles apart and about twenty five miles long. Within this picturesque section of countryside
there are numerous low traffic back country roads that wind back and forth across the valley and up
and down the mountains. Our Fort Ligonier tours use these back country roads to snake through the valley, up
and down the mountains to provide breathtaking views, spectacular sights and a challenging cycling
experience.
Historic Ligonier Valley is the home of Fort Ligonier, Linn Run State Park, Idlewild Park, and Compass Inn and many other historic sites. In the village of Ligonier there are close to 60 quaint shops. They create a turn-of-the-century atmosphere around "the Diamond" which features a charming Gazebo Bandstand that has come to symbolize Ligonier.
Day One:
We meet in the historic village of Ligonier at the Ramada Inn in the heart of the village. Plan to arrive
around 3:00 pm. A welcome packet will be waiting on you at the inn. Around 5:30 pm we will get together for a
brief meeting in the lounge at the inn. If you are using one of our rental bikes we will setup the bike for you.
Later at 6:30 pm we will get together at the Bistro Restaurant at the Inn for a great meal and conversation about your tour details (see link Ramada Historic Ligonier for information about the Ramada). After dinner there will be some time left for a relaxing stroll though the village to take in the sights.
Day Two:
We start in the morning with a breakfast buffet at 7:30 am. On this day we leave the village going west. In a
short while we will travel along a historical part of old route 30 (the Lincoln Highway) near the Lady of the Lake BB. We
will travel along "Two Mile" run.
Two Mile Run is called that because it is exactly two miles from Fort Ligonier. The road was named for the
distance from Fort Ligonier back in the early 1750s. If you were being attacked by indians you had to
run two miles to get back to the Fort.
We will cross one of the ridges that line the valley before dropping
down an exciting descent to "Four Mile" Run road. Note! Another reference to the distance to the fort.
Our ride will wander along a country road that follows a creek bed winding its way through the valley. We will have a
few short climbs as we make our way between the ridges up to the top. A nice descent follows
as we start back down into the valley. We will travel many narrow back country roads that lead us back toward the end of the day's
first ride.
We will have traveled about 25 miles when we stop at the historic Compass Inn. The Compass Inn was a stage
coach stop in the early 1800s. After touring the Inn and it's out buildings (the barn with a stagecoach,
a blacksmiths shop and the external kitchen) we will continue for a couple miles back to
Ligonier for our lunch break. You will have time to visit your hotel room to refresh before starting the second ride of the day.
After lunch we will have a shorter but interesting ride (15 to 18 miles) that will pass by a stone Iron
Funace built in the early 1800s, many nice views and back country roads. We should return to the home-base
by 4:30 pm.
You will a little time to shop, rest or explore some of the many shops in the village of Ligonier. The day
will wind down with a terrific dinner at the Ivy Cafe at 6:30 pm. The Ivy’s Café was recently awarded,
"2006 Best Independent Restaurant of the Year!" and
ReNae and Doug Morse were awarded, "2006 North America’s Independent Restaurant Marketers of the
Year!"
Day Three:
The day starts with a breakfast buffet at 7:30 am. Afterwards we leave the village of Ligonier going west
and then north. We will travel along a winding road gradually climbing up and over a scenic ridge. At the
top we will turn south and descend down a scenic road before continuing our jouney across the valley.
This part of the ride will be on back country roads that pass many cottages nestled
within the surrounding forest.
The route passes Idlewild Park on the left and continues along the valley on the east side of Chestnut
Ridge mountain. We will work our way through the valley and up over a small unnamed ridge the divides the
valley. We will pass many interesting sights as we continue to the end of the day's first ride.
We will continue for a few more miles back to Ligonier for our lunch break and a tour of historic Fort
Ligonier. You will have time to visit your hotel room to refresh before starting the second ride of the day.
After lunch we will do the second ride of the day (15 to 17 miles) that will have many nice views and back country roads. We should return to the home-base by 4:00 pm.
Those on a three day tour will be provided a
room to shower before saying goodbye.
Everyone else will have a little time to shop, rest or explore some of the many shops in the village of Ligonier.
The day will wind down with a great dinner at the Ligonier Tavern
at 6:30 pm. The Ligonier Tavern was first built as the home of Ligonier's first mayor in 1895. This was
the first home in Ligonier with indoor plumbing. It was converted to a hotel and restaurant in 1927
Optional Day Four:
We start in the morning with a breakfast buffet at 7:30 am. Our first ride of the day will take us west
and then turn north. We will climb up out of the valley on a winding road that will provide us will great views
of the mountains. As we wind our way
through the valley between Chestnut Ridge and Laurel mountain we will pass many country farms.
As we continue on, we will we travel along the lower slopes of Chestnut ridge. Our route will be along very low
traffic back country roads that are completely shaded by the trees. As we begin our return to Ligoiner we will pass a
beautiful lake nestled along the slopes of the mountain. Around noon, after about 22 miles, we will arrive
back at our home-base for our lunch break.
We will be very near your lodging so a brief trip to your room before will be possible before we continue.
The second ride of the day will be shorter (15 to 18 miles) but the views and sights will be no less
impressive. Our bike tour will turn south and proceed out past the Rolling Rock farms where many eguestrian
events are held each year. We will have a few short climbs up over the many ridges that lay on a north/south
direction thru the valley.
Our ride will take us past many great vistas and three original log cabins, that are still in use, as it winds back
and forth through the valley.
We will return to the home-base around 3:30 pm. A room will be available for everyone to shower and
dress before saying goodbye and heading for home.
