Who are we!
Darlene and I are two people who love to be active and do many different things. We have been riding bicycles for many years and consider it to be our most important health care plan. We love road cycling and take every opportunity to be on our bikes out on the road. In a typical year I ride around 5000 miles and Darlene usually gets in about 2000 miles. We try to take part in at least one or two bicycle tours each year. We do this to keep abreast of what our competition is doing. We participate in a few of the regional bicycle races in Pennsylvania. I usually enter 10 to 12 road races each year. I also do a few time-trial races. Darlene prefers to do time trial-races and usually does 3 or 4 each year. We both plan on competing in the PA senior games (cycling events of course) each year.
I am a retired Electrical Engineer and Information System manager. Darlene worked for
many years in the medical field as a Phlebotomist. When she wasn't working outside the
home she was raising three children. We live in Latrobe Pennsylvania.
Darlene has lived here all her life.
I was born and raised near Elmira NY and moved to this area in 1982.
In addition to road cycling we love golf, hiking, ballroom dancing and flying. Up until 2004 we
owned our own airplane and flew about 125 hours/year.
We frequently flew to Myrtle Beach for vacations at the beach, and to many other places east of the
Mississippi river. We sold the plane mostly to have more time for cycling.
We started "Laurel Highlands Cycling Tours" after we experienced several enjoyable bicycle vacations ourselves. We knew that in the Laurel Highlands region of western Pennsylvania we could offer some terrific rides for cyclist of all levels. In addition to the great rides, we knew this area offered so many different non-cycling activities that could complement the bicycle tours. We felt that with our own road cycling experiences we could put together really exciting and fun bicycle tours. We designed our bicycle vacation packages to give everyone a chance to ride and yet still be on a real vacation.
If your spouse doesn't enjoy riding as much as you, he or she can enjoy some of the many non-cycling things to do at the tour home base while you ride. On many of our bicycle tours the rides start and end at your hotel. We structure our daily rides in two parts with a lunch break near the hotel. The first part of the ride is the longest each day. If you like, you can skip the second shorter part of the ride to spend more time with your significant other. This way you can get in some good riding each day and still have a great vacation experience with the person most important to you.
One of the most enjoyable things about cycling has always been the people we have had the pleasure to meet. I can honestly say I never met someone riding that I didn't enjoy talking to. The cycling tours business is another way for us to meet great people and spend more time on our bicycles!
